THE NEED FOR SPEED?
150 mph chase lands Carlisle man in jail
story by Bloomfield Free Press

POSTED AT 1:35 A.M. ON SUNDAY, MAY 18, 2008

FIRST PHOTO - Greene County Sheriff's Deputy Chris McDonald talks with Michael C. Bohnert of Dugger, Ind., after finally catching the man after a chase in which he drove 140-150 mph in an alleged attempt to elude officers. SECOND PHOTO - Linton Police Cpl. Paul Clark helps Bohnert look at his cell phone to see who is calling as he waits for his ride to jail. LIGHTHOUSE JUNCTION - There was a lesson to be learned early Sunday morning in the Switz City and Lighthouse Junction areas: if you borrow your buddy's sports car to pick up a girl in Bloomington, it's probably not a good idea to drive it 150 mph through Greene County.
According to Greene County Sheriff's Deputy Chris McDonald, that's the lesson that Michael C. Bohnert, 26, of Carlisle, Ind., learned the hard way.
McDonald and Reserve Deputy Bob Richardson were both in the Switz City area late Saturday/early Sunday morning on routine patrol when they both saw a 2006 Ford Mustang go past on State Route 54 headed east at a very high rate of speed.
Both officers gave chase, and the car turned south on State Route 57. Although officers were pursuing the fleeing vehicle, it managed to outrun them - by driving an estimated 140-150 mph. Bohnert apparently went to County Road 200 South off of State Route 57 and turned around in a driveway - leaving tire marks on the road - before nonchalantly getting back onto State Route 57 and heading back north in an apparent attempt to thwart lawmen.
However, after positively identifying the car, Bloomfield officers Brad Deckard and Jordan Hasler stopped the vehicle and arrested Bohnert, who had borrowed the car from its owner, Anthony Reed of Dugger, Ind. When contacted, Reed told investigators that he had, in fact, loaned Bohnert the car, but he thought the man was just going to Bloomfield.
While Bohnert was on his way to the Greene County Jail to face preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement with a motor vehicle, a Class D felony and reckless driving, a Class B misdemeanor, and the car was impounded by Bay's Old Barn Garage and Wrecker Service of Bloomfield. Bohnert also received a pair of traffic tickets - one of which was for driving while suspended.
During interviews at the scene, Bohnert denied he had tried to outrun the law, and told officers he was going to Bloomington from Dugger - via Lyons - and that was why he was on State Route 57. Lyons Town Marshal Ron Sparks was downtown Lyons for the hour preceding the chase, and he says he never saw the car in his town.
And, Reed told officers that the man had just come from Dugger a very short earlier. The chase started at about 12:16 a.m. Sunday.
Responding to the chase were Greene County Sheriff's Deputies, Bloomfield Police, Linton Police, Lyons Police, Worthington Police and the Indiana State Police.
