Jerrell believes the amounts for traffic violations in Linton are too low.
He wants to raise the ticket price for a speeding or disregarding a stop sign violation from $25 to $85. He also recommended that parking fines be raised from $5 to $15, and an accident report form request increased from $5 to $15.
Good job Chief Jerrell.
According to the chief, the traffic violation ordinance has not been updated since the early 1980s. It's time to do so.
The price of gas and a loaf of bread have certainly increased since the early 1980s, so violation amounts should too.
Since the story was first reported on this newspaper's Web site Monday night, several have commented on the subject. Some agree, while others question if the violations will be enforced.
That's a valid point. It really doesn't matter how much you increase the amounts, if tickets aren't written then the problems won't go away.
Before jumping to conclusions, give Jerrell and his department a chance. The Linton City Council should OK the increases, and then let the Linton Police Department do its job.
